about
Wyl is an amazing musician and producer, and he's an even better human being. We've collaborated a number of times since I returned to Boston, and this particular track sat with me for a couple of months before a fortuitous Lyft ride.
My Lyft driver in an attempt to build a positive rapport gave me the formula you hear in the hook when he learned I was on my to a teaching gig as an artist. When I told him I want to use that in a song, he blessed me with permission and told me he wanted to hear it on the radio one day. So shout out to Ronald who drove that Grey Toyota Corolla on 9/9/22 at 7am.
And shout out to Patty and CharRon for a 4 hour studio session over Zoom that made this coast to coast collaboration possible.
And lastly, shout out to ME for using "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" in a rap verse. That's why I'm yo grandma's favorite!
lyrics
That's why I'm yo grandma's favorite
Shout out to Wyl
He's the real deal
Heavily melinated, presentation elevated
Educated, solid foundation like a basement
America's most hated, my black skin deserves love
and that's why I'm yo grandma's favorite
You make a scene, I put em up on the screen
Rapper turned producer, never in my wildest dreams
This is super califragil - expiali- docious
They wouldn't let me in, so I built my own shit
Literary craftsman, as a Black man
Create my own luck, mic like dice in my hand
A divine plan, like it was all arranged
Seen it all the way through when my life was a maze
I was confused, guilty about why I survived
But then I realized my words keep the youngins alive
The driver in my Lyft told me something real clever
2 teach is 2 touch the peoples lives 4 ever
2 teach is 2 touch the peoples lives 4 ever
2 teach is 2 touch the peoples lives 4 ever
2 teach is 2 touch the peoples lives 4 ever
2 teach is 2 touch the peoples lives 4 ever
Whoopin ass like John Nash in math class
They all used to laugh, but now I'm making them mad
Used to write all my dreams down with a pen and a pad
Visions of a future that I can hold in my grasp
Prolly make more scratch writing bout shaking some ass
Spending a bag, TikTok trends and fads
But I chose a road less traveled by the many
My book of rhymes is deadly, synonymous with legendary
Harlem renaissance man, my interests varied
Moved state to state and my influence carried
Gave you the recipe, can't figure out the sauce
When you travel with the village, you can never be lost
Make the complex simple, categorically challenge normalcy
Check the numbers yourself, then apologize formally
Maybe you're bored of me, or sick of me being right
Just leave me to wrestle with my beautiful mind
2 teach is 2 touch the peoples lives 4 ever
2 teach is 2 touch the peoples lives 4 ever
2 teach is 2 touch the peoples lives 4 ever
2 teach is 2 touch the peoples lives 4 ever
Built my own shit
That's why I'm yo grandma's favorite
Beautiful mind
When you travel with the village, you can never be lost
Check the numbers yourself, then apologize formally
